How though? One of the points of the original film seemed to be to show how disorienting having a mental illness like this is by intentionally making the audience unsure of what events actually occurred.

I feel like the first movie ended just before this concept wouldve snowballed too far and turned the story into an unintelligible mess. The only follow-ups I can see are going with the unintelligible mess or nailing down what actually happened in the first movie; either ruining the experience of the second movie or the intent of the first, respectively.

Theoretically speaking, they could also do a "sequel" that's really just a completely different origin story for The Joker, referencing his "multiple choice" past from The Killing Joke.

I doubt they'd do that here, but if they got clever about it, it could be interesting

EDIT: Alternatively, since we can at least say he was definitely in the asylum, they just continue on from there and any references to the past are treated both in-universe and out as vague and unreliable
