The conversion from legendary crest -> gem is pretty well documented. Buying legendary crests is just like buying a roll in any other game. It's a bit shitty that it's in a Diablo game, but there are weaker F2P alternatives. But the core of the game is very fun, so far. Run around and kill stuff, get gear (which you cannot buy), get levels (which you cannot buy), and progress. It might change at endgame, but I've seen almost no reason to actually spend money outside cosmetics. And the advertising is almost entirely hidden outside of the cash shop.
