I saw a Japanese visual novel on Steam that lasts an hour at most with overwhelmingly positive reviews. meanwhile if a westerner did that gamers(tm) would shaft them

But why is Diablo Immortal getting MAULED when Genshin Impact and FGO have the exact same problems? if they weren't full of waifus GI would've died in the first year

I'm 20 hours into Diqblo Immortal an I'm pretty sure most of the mt discussion is overblown, or at least misinformed. The grind to end game is pretty long (and can't really be sped up with money) and I be able to judge better when I get there. It's really not as aggressive with advertising as people are claiming. Most of the claims are outright lies.

if diablo immortal was by Mihoyo/Cygames with an anime art style it'll be praised as the "best mobile game ever". Genshin Impact is just as bad when you think about it

No. I play both games and GI is definitely worse on the MTX end.

The hate is mostly from people who never played F2P games before and don't understand the monetization strategies so they don't know what's a good buy and what isn't and what a paywall actually looks like and whether or not something can be done for free.

One of the most common complaints I see is that you can't get a gem higher than rank 2 without paying. That is objectively false. Don't get me wrong you can get more and much faster if you pay, but you can craft a random rank gem using just F2P currency.

Another thing people complain about is the battle pass. There's a 5$ version and a 15$ version. People are assuming the 15$ version is somehow better when it's literally just an exclusive character frame + extra 15 levels head start (takes like a couple days to grind the first 15 levels).

You've got people thinking that if you don't buy literally everything that flashes on the screen you're going to be missing out somehow.

This is just not true. You can easily and quite happily ignore all MTX in the game and you won't even notice you're missing out until you get to the very endgame.

But when it comes to Genshin Impact oho things are completely different now. Every single MTX banner is for a limited unit & weapon and if you don't get them you absolutely will be missing out and the only way to get the most powerful upgrades for those weapons and units is through the gacha system. To use ridiculous "Max out" logic like Diablo Immortal tubers have been doing, it takes around $1,500 to max a character and $3,000 to max a weapon unless you get some really good luck. And that also assumes you're combining it with free shit that you get. If you just try to buy it straight up, it's more like $5000.

But that's just 1 character. You actually need to max out 8 characters to fill your team for the spiral abyss so it's really $40,000

But wait there's more. Gachas thrive on power creep so that $5,000 you spent 2 months ago is useless now because there's a new character and weapon that does everything but better.

People who actually play the game, however, will tell you that you can actually beat the spiral abyss using only free characters and weapons. But the haters don't want to hear it. They're more interested in pointing out how it's gonna take $40,000 to max out your team + $5,000 monthly subscription.

I bought the battle pass and monthly pass, so $15 total. The conversion from legendary crest -> gem is pretty well documented. Buying legendary crests is just like buying a roll in any other game. It's a bit shitty that it's in a Diablo game, but there are weaker F2P alternatives.

But the core of the game is very fun, so far. Run around and kill stuff, get gear (which you cannot buy), get levels (which you cannot buy), and progress. It might change at endgame, but I've seen almost no reason to actually spend money outside cosmetics. And the advertising is almost entirely hidden outside of the cash shop. In fact, if you hide the very clunky and buggy quest tracking bar I think you see no advertising whatsoever besides the first time the game drags you to the cash shop.
