No, trains in the NYC subway are mostly manually driven, and on the few lines that do have automatic train operation, it's new (to NYC Transit anyway) and doesn't work perfectly, especially in outdoor stations where weather can, and does make things tricky as well as continued signal issues that cause trains to randomly stop. Also, setting up gates at every station would probably cost billions and the MTA would much prefer to spend money adding CBTC (the signal system that allows for the automatic train operation mentioned above) to more lines, and providing ridiculous amounts of overtime. --- I have been baptized twice, once in water, once in flame.
