OK, so this was a great game overall. I liked how from the beginning and all throughout the game, it seemed to set DR1 up and then subvert it in some way. This also extends to the ending, with DR 1 being very "hope good despair bad" and this one being more "decide for yourself whether you want hope or despair"

I liked the new minigames overall, but felt that in some trials they took away focus from the non-stop debates. Those are the core of trial gameplay for me, with the other minigames being cool additions to break up the monotony. That said, the large number of types of minigame meant that the individual minigames were used sparingly, which I appreciated.

The investigative side was better than DR1 too. In contrast to DR1, I liked how usually you had enough information going into a trial to be able to figure out most of what went down. Trial 4 had the best aha moment for me with the two areas and their positioning, and was probably the best trial for me. I enjoyed how they were longer and more nuanced/complex than DR1 too

The characters were overall pretty cool. I felt Mahiru was quite bland and not really fleshed out within the main game, but the rest of the cast was distinct and memorable. Akane was best girl with Chiaki getting an honourable mention and Gundham was best boy with Nekomaru getting an honourable mention. I liked Hajime as a protagonist, Junko is always great and Nagito was oddly compelling. Despite post #157, I'm still convinced Makoto and Nagito are secretly related somehow <_<

There are two things I feel could have been improved:
  1. The (earlier) executions were bland and felt lacking compared to the first one. In particular, they were less cruel/ironic. YMMV
  2. The interactions between Monokuma and Usami were ...not great. I'm not convinced Monokuma needs an extra character to bounce off; the schoolchildren are fine for that purpose imo.
I think I covered everything I wanted to talk about

My only real problem with the ending is that the conclusion is a complete power of friendship asspull that makes no sense and just happens cause it happens. I mostly ignore it because what the ending does in focusing on Hajime and the other characters to a lesser extent is so good. I even don't mind the return of big boobie Junko for the same reason. Not having to set up a new villain makes it easier to focus on Hajime.
I get that tbh, it does come out of nowhere. But I felt it was well-deserved and I don't begrudge the characters a happy ending in that regard
