So when I bought this game, I wanted to wait until I'd been on holiday and returned to play it. What I did do was play the opening (where you walk around the island and meet everyone, but I stopped when usami called us all together) and my current theory is that this is an alternate universe to DR1 where you're playing the Kyoko-alt instead of the Makoto-alt. I guess time will tell if that turns out to be true or not

Yeah, DR2 has a different vibe with music but I ended up liking it more than DR1's.

Is Nagito voiced by the same guy who voiced Makoto?

Indeed actually. Bryce Papenbrook. His Nagito voice is honestly great, I loved it.

Anything's better than his pre-S4 Eren voice

Not really a fan of the beach vibe and travel element of DR2, but it's still a great game that I like in spite of such minor squabbles.

It certainly is more polished, that's true. But there's charm in unpolishedness >_>

Man I missed this 8-bit-like music just before a class trial

The knife and night vision goggles were byakuya's, that much is clear. He probably hid the knife under the table as a safety precaution and covered it in glowing paint just in case. The blackout was caused by both ACs being on at the same time. Byakuya was killed by a skewer imo, and the fact that Gundham got his earring back means that he must have found a way under the old building. Peko is probably ill (from the food maybe), and may have been in the bathroom when Nekomaru tried to go.

I'm not sure what the significance of the irons and the other bloodstained tablecloth is; it was swapped out but I'm not sure where or when. I also don't get the significance of the "embarrassing pose"; maybe she tripped from the cord of the lamp on the table Byakuya was under. Neither do I get the significance of Byakuya's statements as heard by Ibuki. The only guess I have is that it was impossible for him to say those things for some reason, and as a result Ibuki is lying and is therefore the killer, but I admit I have no evidence to back that up

I'll do the trial tomorrow; I travelled today and am feeling somewhat tired. Plus sleeping on these things sometimes helps

Ok I lied, I continued up to the interlude in the trial

Nagito is ..interesting. Reminds me of an apocalypse preacher in a way. I really liked the mechanic with others rebutting you; the first time it happened I almost jumped out of my chair. The rebuttal minigame itself took some getting used to and I'm still not sure if it makes a difference which sword you use to slice a statement using the left stick. Other than that, I'm having fun!

I'll do this when I have the character list in front of me once I start the game tomorrow. Though I didn't expect Byakuya to kick the bucket so soon, and based on Nagito's behaviour during the trial I reckon he's gonna stick around

I'm still not sure if it makes a difference which sword you use to slice a statement using the left stick.

The direction is just because later on the statements are in weird positions so you need angled slices.

Though as a gameplay tip, slicing in one direction and then the complete opposite direction next (so up, down, up, down) deals more damage to the statements. That'll help later on when they start greatly limiting the amount of slices you can do.

IIRC it's actually twice in the same direction and then the opposite, so up up down for example.

There's one section in chapter 2 where I'm pretty sure you can't complete the section without using that technique or having the skill that gives you more slices, but other than that one time I don't think you need to do it if you just don't fail your slices.

It does for the final strike to counter their claim.

Oh man, 2 is definitely my favorite. Though I will say the translation can be... odd. Feels like a very literal translation at times?

Yeah, you're not using your "truth blade" for destroying generic claims the opponent makes, you're only using it for the final strike to directly their argument. The rest of the time you're just quickly swooshing your hand in front of their face to annoy them.

It is though. They've very much improved upon how it frustrates you.

I'm one of the few people who actually enjoyed improved hangmans gambit (although I hear it's a lot better on the PC with a mouse). There was some actual strategy involved in it, and it's not as complicated as the (bad) tutorial makes it. Just combine pairs of letters and think ahead so you have letters you need floating in a spot on standby (if you know you need a T three letters from now, combine two T's and let it hang out until you need it), so then you can hit like 3+ letters all in a row. Remember you can also speed up and slow down, and it's fine. Let similar letters run into each other, move different letters out of each others way, and your done.

Also you might notice that trials in 2 going forward are much longer and more complicated than in 1. And they don't hold your hand even though it's the first trial.

Finished Ch 1

I liked that the trial was longer. The (improved) Hangman's Gambit definitely had more strategy to it, but I never had any major issues with the original so whatever. It took a few tries to get to grips with, but that shouldn't be an issue going forward.

I liked the story of the trial. In particular, I felt that everything was foreshadowed well enough (more so than DR1, which always brought new info into the middle of a trial), even if I didn't pick up on it. In particular, Teruteru not being in the room after the blackout should have been a major giveaway. I feel sympathy for him, but the show must go on. Nagito being a hope fetishist is an interesting direction to take and I'm looking forward to seeing how his character progresses. Bryce Papenbrook is really bringing his A game to this role
