Yeah; civil rights, race relations, wars with other countries, they were usually very openly on one side of the issue.

It just seems less preachy because most of the things they're speaking in favour of have been resolved to the point where the opinions they're expressing are fairly normal in the modern world. At the time, they were absolutely taking a very hardline stance against the status quo, often quite controversially.

The difference, then, is not that media has become more aggressively political, it's that media that feels less aggressively political (because its messages have become normalized) is available to fall back on if somebody feels uncomfortable having their world view challenged.
