I still maintain that this is in fact "cheating" in terms of narrative point of view / internal monologue fidelity

it makes for a fun twist retroactively but it's just not how fiction/storytelling works unless it is set up earlier on that our player protagonist is unreliable or capable of "hiding" things from the player.

this is different from an "unreliable narrator" in fiction in that we actually "play as" this character, and thus the player is invited into considering them an avatar. a character they have control of in terms of actions.

one might argue that the inversion of expectations in terms of player control is what makes the twist brilliant: the designers purposefully create a sense of disorientation in the player, having had their own sense of control questioned. I agree!

but as a mystery/whodunnit it's cheating.
