things have changed a lot and in some ways for the better (like how much more overt homophobia there was on internet communities, and it would often get upheld and sanctioned by the moderators on sites like this. and there was nothing you could do but to watch a swarm of your peers tell you that you don't deserve equal rights)

but yeah there are also a lot of ways that it's gotten worse. invasive data mining and aggressive monetization of everything. proliferation of propaganda on social media. Corporate-kowtowing algorithms that dictate what kinds of content people should be making, so they can't make what they really want to.
