Because it'd stupidly pedantic when nearly everyone who was rich had slaves for thousands of years. Let's rename all the calendar months named after Roman emperors they had slaves. And let's shun going to see pyramids in Egypt, ancient architecture in Europe or Asia.

Might as well state every rich person before 1700 was a bad person and you shouldn't find anything about them positive because they had slaves

Fun fact in my history classes we talked mad shit about the Roman and Egyptian empires because of this. "Wow that's really fucked up."

"Hey he had slaves, let's not name schools after him." sounds like a reasonable take to me. Because the school name is a symbolic gesture and nothing else.
