Movie was alright yeah. You could really tell the animators had fun with this one for sure. Lots of love put into that.

I think the overly goofy style and energy in the animation pulls me a bit out of the emotional scenes. It's a bit hard to explain but it's hard to really get that emotional gut punch because the movie rarely takes itself seriously. I felt the exact same way for Mitchells vs the Machines (since they have similar styles in terms of presentation), but probably even more so for this.

Not that fantasy aspects like people being able turn into weird red pandas can't be engaging and have raw moments, it's just the tone and feel that the movie presented really didn't allow for such things. Most I felt was when Mei was pulling away from her red panda form and she looks back as her form does too.

That being said, it was actually quite funny. Most of the humor with Mei and the kids was a miss for me, but I appreciate the accuracy to the 90s/early 2000s as someone who was also a 90s boy living in Canada.

Ming was by far and away the best character in the film. Most of my laughs came from her and I thought her character arc was a lot stronger than Mei's, as well as just being a more interesting character in general. I wish we had got more with Jin as I think both parents were quite good.
