Have seen good reviews and people with bad reviews seem to be getting memmed on hard for bad takes ("I can't relate to this movie because I'm not Asian, why is this movie about Asians??")

Don't know if it's worth reactivating Disney+ though.

Just watched it

Very, very easily a top tier Pixar movie. God damn. I can't believe how hard Disney is screwing this movie over.

The animation alone makes it worth the watch. Luca had great animation and this is not only a step up, but it's moving in the direction of something like Spider-Verse or Mitchells vs Machines which have this very expressive cartoony style I absolutely adore.

I freakin' loved it! So emotional and genuinely funny. God, do I know what it's like to try and be perfect all the time, geez. And the animation was gorgeous as usual. The anime and kaiju send-ups were so cool and not overdone either.

Watched it, was okay. Story was okay (similar but better than Encanto) but dialogue and characters didn't hit with me too well. I'm obv not the target there though. Graphics were really damn good, especially the 2D effects they mixed in. It definitely feels like the movie was designed around the visuals first and the rest was filled in later. The whole fundraising part felt out of place to me.

Anyway what probably happened was Disney was upset that Pixar made a movie that was too controversial with too limited appeal and this was a direct message to Pixar to focus on spitting out more Toy Story movies or something.

Is there actual controversy? Besides dunking on that one reviewer I haven't seen any.

And I kind of doubt Disney is punishing Pixar for creative decisions - from my limited outsider perspective there's a lot of signs they were trying to line up a critical and commercial hit. They've got an award winning producer, it's hyper-targeted to millennials as well as kids, flashy animation, and big name producers on the soundtrack who I literally did not know about until the credits rolled (Finneas aka Billie Eilish's brother producer and Gorrannson who is Gambino's producer and scores a lot of Disney's blockbusters). And then they just. Decided not to market it for whatever reason.

Well to be honest, given stuff like this I'm almost certain there is a lot of tension between Disney and the Pixar staff we just don't know the details about.

Right, and they haven't been telling Pixar about this in advance, they've been making decisions on the fly which leads to weird stuff like the Black Widow mess.

What what is controversial about it?

It rather directly deals with being a preteen girl - i.e. something specifically relatable to kids that age that offends their overbearing parents. The fact the 'villain' is an overbearing parent adds to their anger.

There's also controversy around a review which called the film unrelatable due to its specific setting and protagonist, but that's more the review being controversial than the film.

Movie was alright yeah. You could really tell the animators had fun with this one for sure. Lots of love put into that.

I think the overly goofy style and energy in the animation pulls me a bit out of the emotional scenes. It's a bit hard to explain but it's hard to really get that emotional gut punch because the movie rarely takes itself seriously. I felt the exact same way for Mitchells vs the Machines (since they have similar styles in terms of presentation), but probably even more so for this.

Not that fantasy aspects like people being able turn into weird red pandas can't be engaging and have raw moments, it's just the tone and feel that the movie presented really didn't allow for such things. Most I felt was when Mei was pulling away from her red panda form and she looks back as her form does too.

That being said, it was actually quite funny. Most of the humor with Mei and the kids was a miss for me, but I appreciate the accuracy to the 90s/early 2000s as someone who was also a 90s boy living in Canada.

Ming was by far and away the best character in the film. Most of my laughs came from her and I thought her character arc was a lot stronger than Mei's, as well as just being a more interesting character in general. I wish we had got more with Jin as I think both parents were quite good.

I thought it was ok. I loved basically every animated movie I saw last year (Luca, Raya, Encanto, Mitchells vs the Machines, even Onward) and I couldnt quite get into it as much as any of them. I felt it tried to emulate Mitchells joke-per-minute quirky style to less effect for me, and the story was underbaked. But Im clearly not the target audience

The comparison to Mitchell's is a pretty good one. Similar styles. I feel like this one did a better job of not letting the style interfere with the movie (I thought Mitchell's style ran its course by half way through the movie)

Any criticisms about "limited target demos" - numerous or not - ring hollow to me. I just watched it, and it was very much a coming of age story about trying to discover oneself while navigating the stressful waters of awkward school life and smothering home life. I felt like it was much more about growing up in general versus womanhood in particular; I never saw the "red panda" as a metaphor for a period and thought the movie hardly mentioned that outside of one scene.

I also thought it was pretty good in general, not great. I disliked Brave and thought Soul was meh, so maybe I'm not into Pixar movies full of people turning into animals.

Turning Red beated, good movie. Got me to pause my rune factories to focus on it for the last half. Really nice end though, kept well to its messaging on emotions and going your way.

Worth noting that when Mei asks if that's ever actually happened the response is that it just MUST NOT happen. Given the negative experiences the older generation had with it I take it there was just a strong fear to suppress.
