My impression of Opeth was based on older, more death metal-ly material I'd heard from prior to this album. Even back then they didn't grab me. As was previously mentioned, this is quite a departure from that. I'd imagine this would have been quite a controversial shock to long time fans of the band.

yes and no - a section of their fanbase was worried by Wilson's influence on Blackwater Park. They released Deliverance (their heaviest album) 6 months before Damnation. At the same time, if you were worried about Opeth going away from their 90s material, well, Damnation was a big problem for you. They released two more albums with death metal elements and since then it's all been clean vocals.
