Nah, it's definitely comparable to Secret of Mana in some ways.
Also, mortar > all. I'd say they did a pretty good job of balancing the weapons and making them fun, but the mortar stands out as too powerful in my mind, while the dueling pistols without a turbo button are too weak.
My combo ended up being pike/mortar (armor piercing on the pike was pretty useful). I liked the scrap musket and army carbine as well though. By the way, did you do all the dream sequences? There's one in the DLC, though I think it's like $1 on the 360.
Also, the decisions at the end are pretty great, and I actually ended up having a long discussion with my roommate about them. That's one of the first times a game has prompted that from me.
