I always have mixed feelings about shit like this. While his behavior was awful, his son almost died due to some asshole's negligence so a certain amount of anger is understandable.

That's at least partly bullshit because pretty much anybody can be pushed to violence under the right circumstances. And while racist remarks may seem different at face value, people trying to get under other peoples' skin will often use anything at their disposal whether or not it conforms to their beliefs. In some cases, this can include slurs against their own group.
