I might be one of the few non-regular players that prefers modern Yu-Gi-Oh to the older format, mainly because even as a kid I always thought Tribute Summoning, Ritual Monsters, and Fusion was always dumb and useless. Back in the day it wasn't even worth bothering using anything that took more than a turn to get, especially if it like would just die to Trap Hole anyway. I thought the Synchro and XYZ monsters fixed that problem and made the game a lot more fun for me.
