Well, the saber was used on the battlefield more than the rapier because it could be used from horse back easier. You aren't going to be using a rapier on horseback. The rapier was a popular sidearm for infantry before gunpowder & extremely popular for civilian use.

Even without a horse, a slashing weapon makes more sense on a battlefield. A weapon is more likely to get stuck on a thrust, which was also an occasional issue with bayonets. (Not that it ever discouraged spear use, but spears are stupidly OP as far as melee weapons go.)
