Going to HR would be a mistake unless he's going out of his way to harass you about it out of the blue. tbqh, it was a mistake to tell your coworkers in the first place, it's none of their business.

I wouldn't have even spoken with him privately about it, all it does is cause friction for the future. Just let it slide, take your time, and don't talk with this person outside of the necessary work related correspondence.
