I generally want to keep distance from my opponent in an fight & the rapier has both range

I mean, it's not longer than a lot of other swords?

and speed.

Somewhat debatable? That more comes down to the wielder's strength and expertise.

Plus stabs are easier to initiate & harder to defend than cutting motions.

It depends? More importantly, there are a LOT of other concerns with swordsmanship.

There is pretty much a reason it was the go to sword since its invention.

Ah, no, quite a few things wrong there. First, the rapier has not been the "go-to sword" since its invention. The saber was far more popular on the battlefield than the rapier, and the rapier fell out of practical use sooner than the saber (and variations of the saber). The saber was in use up until... well, I mean technically sabers are STILL used today, but they functionally fell out of use between WWI and WWII. And the rapier never caught on at all in some cultures.

Second, its popularity has less to do with the fact it's a good sword -- although it is a good sword -- than it does with changing social trends and the use of guns.

That said, for a 1v1 duel against a single, unarmored opponent, it's a very practical choice. For general function, you'd probably want a more balanced sword.
