Suppose there are two things: A and B. You want to discover why A is more popular than B. Here's what you find:

• You poll 100 people. All 100 of them like thing A at a 6/10 level of enthusiasm. They neither love it nor hate it.
• 50 out of that group like thing B at a 10/10 enthusiasm level. It's their favourite thing. The other 50 like thing B at a 1/10 enthusiasm level. They find it revolting.
• Thing A is therefore more popular than thing B, even though no one really likes thing A, and many people LOVE thing B.

I'm sure there's some clever statistics term for this phenomenon.
