I think that's a huge bluff and people are giving him entirely too much credit. Specifically, you would not give him the CHANCE to defect. You threaten a speedy investigation into an immediate arrest, he loses his seat, and you force a special election and hand it to McConnell. Basically "if you're going to blow us up anyways we are taking you down with us."
