#1:

Short Version: This year's gimmick is that you can nominate up to two hours of music, divided among up to 100 songs. Please don't nominate a single song over 30 minutes long or over a hundred different songs. Nominations are open for one month and close on January 18th. The preferred nomination format for individual songs is:

Artist - Song Name (Song Length)
link to song

Albums:

Artist - Album Name (Album Length)
link to album

Preferably albums are posted in a format with links to each individual song like a playlist or Spotify link instead of one video with all songs edited together. You can post a video with every song if that's the only way you can find the album, but you should try to avoid that if at all possible.

A list of every song from past ranking topics can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11EyHgbDCHNZd86SwetcXppwR9vEDi7W6owS9dbrmfb8/edit?usp=sharing

You may nominate songs from past ranking topics, so do not concern yourself with avoiding songs from that link unless you actively wish to do so.

If you think there are two songs that should be treated as one for ranking purposes, such as an intro that is randomly listed as a separate track for no good reason, tell me and I'll take it under advisement.

You can nominate multiple versions of the same song, though I'll probably complain if you nominate more than five versions of a single song.

The long version just repeats this information in long form for no valid reason. You can stop reading now and will not miss anything of value. Thank you.

LONG VERSION:

It's finally time for our fourth annual music ranking topic! YAY MUSIC! *excited bouncing*

1: You may nominate up to two hours worth of music! You can nominate a bunch of individual songs, a batch of songs from the same album or playlist, or whatever combination amuses you. It's your time, do whatever you want with it.

1a: I politely ask you not to spend more than half an hour on a single track or use so many short songs that you get over a hundred nominations. I'd also say you probably don't want to nominate a song over twenty minutes long as I don't typically like things that go on quite that long, but hey--you want to take your chances gambling on one song that pushes the limits of what I'll listen to and uses up a lot of your time, you go right ahead. It's quite possible I'll wind up liking it! Not statistically likely from where I'm sitting (or bouncing), but you do you.

1b: If nominating a bunch of versions of the same song amuses you, that is allowed. I mean, between reprisal versions of songs on albums and what not, it'd be quite impossible to have an actual rule against it and I do like hearing different interpretations of a song or an idea. That being said, I'd really appreciate it if you didn't go beyond five versions of the same song? Like, I can't stop you from doing that without accidentally banning legitimate albums or soundtracks with a bunch of reprisals or recycled motifs, but like... five is probably enough?

2: As always, anything that could charitably be considered a song is fair game for nominations. Commercially released songs, covers, remixes, mashups, jingles, themes, VGMs, parodies, whatever.

3: Sometimes an album will break what should be one song into multiple songs. If you nominate an album that you feel features something like that and believe I should count them as one song, feel free to point it out. I reserve the right to merge some songs together if there's a situation like The Megas "History Repeating (Part 1)" and "History Repeating (Part 2)" last year, where both songs would greatly benefit from being treated as one.

4: You do not have to use the full two hours of music. If you wind up going slightly over the limit, I'll likely allow it--it's certainly less trouble to listen to an extra minute or two of music than take a hardline stance about things. Just try not to take advantage of that fact and intentionally push things over the line? Like, it's one thing if you make a list of songs you want to nominate and coincidentally are a little over, but getting to the two hour mark and throwing in an extra song just because you know you can get away with it is... slightly questionable?

5: There is no maximum number of songs that can be nominated. Since I will listen to every song at least twice before starting the ranking, there's probably going to be quite a while before the ranking actually starts. Please understand and I shall try to post periodic updates to keep you informed of my progress. (Also, whenever VGMC noms start up, I will definitely be on break until that phase is over.)

6: If you'd like to be given @ notifications, just say so. I can either notify you when the ranking starts, whenever one of your songs is eliiminated, or I can leave you alone. It's whatever works best for you.

7: Last year, I took songs that I already knew incredibly well and did a mini-ranking with them before moving onto the main ranking. I might do that again; honestly, I quite like starting things off on a positive note and having a smaller list makes it easier to play with formatting and writeups before diving into the big list. But it kinda depends on how many such songs wind up being nominated and I can't really promise to do that or not do that until I know how many such songs there are? So, you know, we'll see. I rarely know what I'm actually doing until I do it. </.<

Either way, don't feel pressured to focus on songs that would either be new or old, or feel like you should try to do a mix or anything. Just nominate whatever you want and I'll do something,

8: Song links can be from any source that I can get to play on my phone. This includes but is not limited to: YouTube, Spotify, Bandcamp, and Soundcloud.

9: The preferred format for songs was posted up in the short version; you don't have to follow it, but do at least tell me how long the songs you're nominating are at the very least? Like if I can't keep track of how much time you've nominated, this entire thing kinda falls apart? Also this should be higher on the list, but I'm kinda doing a stream-of-consciousness thing and don't feel like renumbering things to move it to a more logical position. Also, as stated above, try to avoid combining an entire album into one video when possible...

10: Nominations will be open until January 18th, 2022. If you need more time, post something before the deadline and I can give an extention.

11: And as always, try not to take any of the rankings too seriously. Expect lots of random text-based actions, tail wagging, alternate accounts, running gags, comedic exaggerations, and a lack of coherent or insightful writeups. I don't understand much about music and my thought processes tend to be alien; that being said, every song's placement does reflect how I genuinely feel about it. It's more "I do not suppress my true nature or adhere to any standards of quality" than an actual joke topic. Regardless of how harsh I may be to some songs, I do legitimately appreciate all of the nominations.

Thank you to anyone who read this. Double thank you to anyone who nominates anything.
