This is definitely an intriguing concept, but there's a good bit that holds it back. Most notably, it's pretty goddamn hard to stay awake through. Making a film entirely in sign language could work, but removing any sort of audio design (including music) requires having visual design to compensate and keep things interesting. The Tribe does, occasionally, but in between long, dull takes of almost nothing happening. It doesn't help that with no voices, similar appearances, and similar behaviors, most of the characters largely blend together.
I still don't get certain aspects, like why they strip-searched him initially? And where are literally any adults anywhere in this movie?
There are some REALLY striking moments in here, particularly near the end. The bottle smash over the head in particular was chilling, followed by the nightstand head crush scene. Some of the most brutal stuff out there (and I hate that it took me until the fourth nightstand to realize why nobody was waking up to all the commotion).
But some of this feels borderline exploitative, particularly the long, hard-to-watch abortion scene.
Hard to rate this properly, because it's extremely ambitious, but I also didn't really enjoy it much at all. 6/10
