It was bad. I really dunno how to properly explained this but if you attack a monster that has already been defeated then you will still attack the monster as if he's still there and miss. In most JRPGS, the attack would have redirected to the next monster.

monsters are split into groups so if you get 3 of one kind of monster and 2 of another kind and you have everyone attack one group then when one monster of that group dies IIRC they start attacking a different monster in the same group
the attack misses dont happen until the enemy group is dead but the attack wont switch over to the 2 monsters in the other group
