I really dunno how to properly explained this but if you attack a monster that has already been defeated then you will still attack the monster as if he's still there and miss. In most JRPGS, the attack would have redirected to the next monster. That was kinda common really early on. IIRC the first Final Fantasy was the same way. It sucks and is a pain in the ass, but it's not necessarily uncommon.
