Link still dominates consistently except for in 2007, when the internet rallied behind the Tetris L-Block, and 2013, when Reddit rallied for Draven from League of Legends. The Board 8 response was wildly different to both of these. We were in on the joke with L-Block, but our reception to the Draven thing was overwhelmingly negative and we ironically saw Link as our only hope to save the contest, and even he couldn't pull it off (largely due to circumstances that many still consider suspicious to this day). As for the rest of the crew, like I said, the next tier down (far down) from Link is, as of three years ago, Cloud/Mario/Snake/Samus/Zelda. Further below that group is Sephiroth/Crono/Mega Man/Sonic/Pikachu/Tifa. Although this was before Sephiroth got added to Smash.
