They don't kick in until you get a few hours into the story, but once they do, they happen periodically if you're in an area that meets the right conditions and there's a notication once you do. You can go offline, but the CPU will still invade you. There's only so many times you can get invaded per loop though and there's win conditions that don't involve killing Julianna too, so you have options. Plus each map is pretty big with lots of shortcuts and paths, especially if you invade someone far into the game, so actually finding the player can take a while. --- Still the number one reason for the success of the Internet.
