The CCP controls information, claims Taiwan, and doesn't tolerate civil rights or democracy movements. It's weird to act like this is all new. If anything there was a period of relative relaxation prior to Xi and this is more a return to the norm. You should read about things like the Tiananmen Square Massacre, Taiwan Straight Crisis, and Cultural Revolution if you think things are getting crazy now. This is far from the craziest things have been in China and is certainly not new. This is just how the government works there and people didn't pay attention or care until recently. Probably because of escalating tensions between governments and China and companies kowtowing China in a misguided attempt for market access.
