GameSpot probably holds the most 'review sway' over any single site on the internet, so people are still going to get weird when their favorite series gets a bad score there.
I'd say IGN is up there too. But really any major site that gives a less than glowing review to an anticipated game gets hounded, sadly.

This is exactly what happens. Flynn's purpose in the story falls apart when he gets dragged into the dorky skits and victory quotes for the rest of the party, because he's no longer a shining paragon of excellence who still struggles to make real change happen by virtue of still being only one man. He's just a dude who's kind of uptight and stiff.
I did at least find Flynn and Patty are both really fun in battle! Patty can be super broken but she's one of the few 'gambler' archetypes in gaming that I really enjoyed playing as. And Flynn only joins properly at the very end, so it didn't distract me much.

That middle chunk of the game is still very good, though.
100% agree with this, the middle chunk is far and away the best part of Vesperia!
