As I draw this suddenly overbearingly long project to a close, the writeups get more and more difficult to do, because the less easy it becomes for me to capture the essence of what I really like about a piece of music. The Dark Man theme from MM5 is a really good example of everything just kind of clicking into place perfectly. It's the epitome of the Wily castle theme - uptempo, exciting, lots of dynamic chord changes that build up to a dramatic climax. Obviously, I think it's the best of this style of theme, and even when MM5's soundtrack is getting weirdly overlooked I feel like this theme is cited a lot. Is there any one thing that I can really point to from this theme that makes it such a powerhouse? I don't know. Everything just kind of works and I don't have a lot of good descriptors for it. Describing music is hard! It's always been a standout favorite from my childhood into adulthood, an excellent feather in Mari Yamaguchi's cap, and a theme I'm really glad gets an extended portion of the game dedicated to it.
