Why it was included: A musical western comedy with a female lead? Holy shit, check check and check! Lee Marvin even won a Best Actor Academy Award for his performance. It also made the American Film Institutes list of the top 10 westerns of all time at #10. In case youre wondering, five of those top ten made this list (The Searchers, High Noon, Shane, Stagecoach, and Cat Ballou) with the other five (Unforgiven, Red River, The Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and McCabe and Mrs. Miller) making Westerns 2. The interesting thing about Cat Ballou being a comedy is the source novel being a serious story. In fact, the author, Roy Chanslor, also wrote the novel that was adapted into Johnny Guitar, a not-at-all comedy film that will be on the next list. What Stifled thinks: I have a massive crush on Jane Fonda. If there are ever time machines, I would go back to the 1960s and throw myself at her feet to use me as she wishes. She can do no wrong. Shes also a fantastic actress and Cat Ballou is yet another piece of evidence to support that fact. But before I gush on for too long about her, Ill focus on the movie instead! So I found Cat Ballou to be such a good time. The chemistry between the main cast is so enjoyable to watch. The little touches added like the studio logo at the beginning firing shots are wonderful. The western conventions like random dance numbers and brawls are parodied with such perfect comedic timing that its a shame not every movie can nail it like this one. Train robberies and horse chases are parodied. Even taking a bath is a big gag! Many films on this list are good for different reasons, but Cat Ballou was just pure fun.
