youre being obnoxiously flippant and disingenuous with this
No, I'm not lol that's literally just what you lot are pushing. You may not like ad absurdum but that doesn't make it flippant or disingenuous

youre better than that and you know that is not what anyone is claiming
Except you were, and only after I pointed it out did you fully realize that's what position you had taken and start qualifying your statements to "the flu caaaaan beeeee deadly unnnndeerrr cerrrtaainnn connnddiiitiiooonnsss" and whatnot

Lmfao it's first grade spongebob

It isn't 'giving me trouble'.
I mean it clearly is, like I don't even get the sense that you fully understand the point I'm making to begin with. I'm optimistic so I'm acting like you do but I gotta tell ya man it's a real question mark given how you keep talking past me and failing to even address much less deal with my points

I fail to understand how calling the flu 'deadly' 'dilutes' the meaning of the word.
See, you even admit it right here lol it's giving you mad trouble.

The point is that connotations of words matter and precision of language is important. "Deadly" carries with it a connotation of danger and evokes fear or anxiety because it has "dead" in it and implies death, not as a kinda maybe sorta under the right conditions thing, but as something to actually fear.

Ebola is deadly. The black plague was deadly. Gamma ray bursts are deadly. Sodium cyanide is deadly. If you're exposed to any of these things, no matter who you are, you have a perfectly rational fear for your life. And note that I'm not saying these things are deadly "under certain conditions", there's no qualifier. They're just flat deadly.

The flu is deadly... in the very young, the very old, the immunocompromised, whatever specific conditions you please. COVID is deadly... if you're super out of shape or super old or immunocompromised. Highway driving is deadly... if you don't wear your seat belt, drive drunk, don't keep your attention fixed on driving etc., AND if you happen to be in one of the fraction of collisions that result in death.

Saying any of the above things are just flat, unqualified "deadly" puts them on the same shelf as things anyone, no matter who they are, should reasonably fear, when let's be frank, if you don't fit any of the certain conditions it's not rational to expect your own death if you happen to come down with the flu or drive on the highway.

I mean if you want to push the idea that "deadly" doesn't actually mean "stands a significant chance of actually killing you" and actually means "stands a nonzero chance of killing someone somewhere under certain circumstances" then do you, but like, at that point anything you can fit in your mouth is deadly because you could choke on it, including solid food. All solid food is deadly under this meaning. I mean, like, okay yeah, to a fuckin newborn baby, but that's mighty fuckin silly yeah?
