Just wait and see what he did after stepping off his porch making threats and challenging the officers? If it were anything other than a life or death situation, maybe you'd have a point. Do you understand that everybody involved is a human being and only has one life to live? I don't understand why you think the police should put themselves at the mercy of a potentially drunk guy with a gun and a bad attitude. We already know he was willing to die in a shootout with the police, because his first reaction to being hit with a beanbag was to open fire.
