I dont want to read 356 posts about this, so can someone please summarize whats going on in a non-biased way?

Smith gave us a bait and switch? What did he promise and what did he deliver? Is this something to do with political agenda or did he just not live up to expectations?

extreme tl;dr:
Mattel and Netfix explicitly decided to fund a he-man show for fans that have been keeping the franchise alive for decades
Kevin Smith was brought in, who gave a bunch of interviews toeing that line. Promotional material, tie-in products, and Smith's own interviews gave the impression that He-Man was going to be front and center in the new show
The show comes out, and he kills he-man in episode 1, making the show (technically part 1 of 2) largely about Teela.
Fans get pissed because they didn't get what they were expecting, and Smith doubles down, pointing out that since it's called "Masters of the Universe" and not "He-man: Masters of the Universe" he didn't technically lie at any point.
The usual culture war BS then shows up with some people shitting on it for featuring Teela and other people saying anyone criticizing the show is sexist, muddying the water around any legitimate criticism of the show.

Here are some pre-release articles that highlight how it was promoted, and you can see from the trailer and the cover art that He-Man is front and center.

But David and Netflixs director of original series Ted Biaselli had hit upon a third approach to the property: A show that would be for those adult fans who grew up loving He-Man,' David said. Not to even reimagine: Lets just do a direct continuation of the classic 80s era.

Honestly, if it had been anything else outside of that if they were like, We want you to reinvent this for the modern age that would have scared me off creatively, because Im not that inventive, Smith continued. And also, because I know what a fan base reacts like when they dont get the thing they grew up watching. You think Im gonna be the fall guy for that? If Im involved in a thing, its going to be true to what it is. Its gonna be true to the franchise.

Nobody's been redesigned to where you're 'Oh that's the 2020 version.' They all look like they're supposed to. And the story functions as essentially the next episode when [the 1980s original animated series] stopped.

Together, they crafted what he refers to as "a love letter" for the fans who watched the original show as a kid and are now adults. That doesn't mean Revelation is on the level of something like Amazon's blood-splattered superhero show Invincible, which Smith mentions and admires. But it does mean that the writers room consisting of Marc Bernardin, Eric Carrasco, Diya Mishra, and Tim Sheridan got to "raise the stakes in ways you wouldn't normally do," David adds. "Characters could die. Not saying they will, but they could."
