Even though your body tries at all other times to maintain that 37 degrees through shivering when cold and sweating when hot. Your body does not want to resort to fever but does so if it has to. If all other methods fail the body creates a high temperature in order to kill the virus with heat while not trying to succumb to the heat itself. This is why doctors become very concerned if you are running a high fever. A mild fever may not be so bad but it still affects the body negatively. There is nothing beyond a high fever other than what doctors can do. If the virus does not kill you the extreme heat your body is creating will.
