Of course they are not acknowledging that they fucked up, and instead are trying to say it is new data from the delta strain that has fueled this change in policy; we knew before the vaccine rollout that mask use would have to continue until the majority of the world's population had their shot, and not just those within our own borders. The stance against mask wearing was always a political one; pandemic planning under both Bush (W.) and Obama saw the administration push back against expert recommendations in favour of mask wearing.
