Are critics finally admitting the Ace Attorney series is significant? I just checked Metacritic and it looks like the best the series has done before is an 81. It always felt like critics were arbitrarily limiting their scores due to a lack of 'gameplay' while missing out that it was doing something unique for the medium. This feels less like a declaration that these are the best in the series as much as critics finally getting over this weirdly specific expectation.

I think this is spot on - the Ace Attorney series has really gathered notoriety over time and this feels kind of like a 'giving an overdue actor an oscar award' kind of a deal, although hey, maybe the game really is superlatively good! I also imagine critics just generally focus on other aspects of the game than I do
