At the last Olympics the US won 3x the medals of Germany and France, despite having ~4x the population of Germany, and ~5x the population of France. Look at any other similar Western country and the US almost always underperforms in the medal comparisons relative to population.
I mean this is kinda true but think about if the US was split into, say, 5 different countries. Would you expect those five countries to get more individual medals or fewer? I think youd get more just by virtue of being able to potentially send more people overall to compete. Medals involving team sports could take a hit in that case, theoretically, since talented players might be split up.
