I don't think that Americans have any sort of Olympic advantage because of kids playing sports, etc. The reason we win so many medals is because the US is by far the most populous developed country.

We actually *under*perform when taking all that into account. At the last Olympics the US won 3x the medals of Germany and France, despite having ~4x the population of Germany, and ~5x the population of France. Look at any other similar Western country and the US almost always underperforms in the medal comparisons relative to population.

Edit: The US does very well in Athletics and Swimming, which give out the most medals, which makes the underperformance worse if anything, since doing well in those disciplines should theoretically be helping to make up ground.
