I've read that this was caused by the two evolving separately across a river. On one side of the river, resources were abundant and competition wasn't very high (where the Bonobos evolved). On the other side, resources were scarce and it was a harsher environment (where the chimps evolved).

Weird to think two evolutionary branches stemming from a geographic barrier, but I suppose that's how evolution works!
