I had heard of the name in passing over the years (probably just within the last five years and from sources trying to make it a holiday) but had no fucking clue what it meant and wouldn't have connected it to the event.

First, because we have an absurd number of holidays. Second, holidays disrupt everyday life and it's just one more thing to have to schedule around. And honestly, a lot of federal holidays don't seem to apply to everybody anyway. It's just another day when overpaid government employees are able to take a day off when they already don't work enough for what we're paying them.

You really dont have an understanding of government work. Most federal employees are just as hard working as private employees are. If your idea of overpaid government employees is politicians then you need to get your head out of the sand.
