They're already working on booster shots for COVID-19 variants.

It's not all that unusual. Tetanus shots require boosters after 10 years (formerly every 5 years), and kids in school who required specific vaccinations (like MMR and TB) would occasionally have to get booster shots to make sure they were still working.

The only time you can kind of allow protection to elapse is when you manage to completely wipe out all native traces of a given virus (like smallpox), or manage to contain it sufficiently that it's effectively wiped out in most places (like polio).

We'd never be able to pull that off with Covid, though, because there's far too many stupid people out there consistently making things worse.
