AEW Elevation 5/31/21

1hr21 min. Its the shortest Elevation so far, beating out episode 2 by 4 minutes. Its also a welcome change from the trend of going stupidly long with these (especially given the 2.5-hour ones they did). Although last weeks (which I never finished) was 1hr47, Im still guessing they trimmed the run-time to keep the crowd more energetic, especially since this was the first episode of Elevation with a crowd.

Thunder Rosa promo. Congratulates Britt Baker on winning title, does some trash-talking in Spanish, talks about coming after her, and mentions shes going to prove how tough she is by beating the crap out of Reka Tehaka. Lolwut? Reka hasnt won a match yet. Cutting promos that reference enhancement talent is just stupid.

The Acclaimed v Brent & Brandon Tate (debuting; advertised as former OVW tag champs).

Recap? Jungle Boy interview with Tony Schavione. Christian interrupts. (I didnt come out to steal your moment or take up too much of your time. Lolwut?) and then Matt Hardy interrupts Christian Cage and Private Party blindsides Christian. And then JB suicide dives Private Party. Lolwut?

Leyla Hirsch v Robyn Renegade. Robyn is like twice Leylas size. Again, this looks ridiculous. Robyn had a few neat moves this match. Amusingly, they announced Leyla is #5 on the Womens Rankings.

Varsity Blondes promo. Both are smacktalking Serpentico. Not sure if its a tag team match against Chaos Theory or if just one is fighting Serpentico. Oh, and no Julia Hart.

Thunder Rosa v Reka Tehaka. Thunder Rosa comes out to the biggest pop of the night so far. Also notable for Paul No More BS Wight making a borderline racist statement about Samoans being born to be wrestlers. I have no idea why theyre using Reka as a job gal, she seems better than a lot of the signed talent.

Penta promo on Young Bucks. Also brings up that hes fighting Jack Evans.

Chaos Project v Varsity Blondes (with Julia). Serpentico visibly thigh-slapped when kicking Brians back. Complete, full-view of the camera. Thats some sloppy shit. Julia Hart kinda interferes. When Luther is trying to get Serpentico up so he can throw him on a downed Brian outside the ring, Julia does some cartwheels to get in front of Brian and block them. Aubrey waves her off, but doesnt kick her out. Considering its a Chaos Project match, it wasnt too bad. Chaos Project is just embarrassing, though. Luther and Serpentico are just lousy wrestlers, even if they work well as a team.

Another segment billed as being after DoN. Tony talks to Dustin about an upcoming match with Comoroto. I skipped it, because I just dont care. Im not watching Dynamite anyway.

Swole & Velvet v Nyla & the Bunny (with HFO). Ehh, what? Another womens team that was just tossed together. Madi & Bunny worked, but this seemed eh? You have two women who have managers being paired together. Why? Vicky referred to Bunny as Aly? Otherwise Bunny and Nyla looked good coming out together and posing, as did Swole & Velvet. Swole looked great during the match, we got to see her agility and speed. Bunny & Nyla are kind of an awkward combo and you have way too many people at ringside, but it was still probably the best match of the night to this point.

Joey Janella backstage interview. This guy is such a goof. Hes talking about him and Sonny, which he describes as being like jelly and Nutella. -_- Otherwise its awkward that the interviewer is like a head taller than the wrestler. Thats the opposite of how it should be.

Jack Evans (w/ Angelico) v Penta. So I guess Evans isnt injured? Then why has Angelico been wrestling in singles lately? Penta has a really cool gold and black costume, which really makes the design pop. Jack is ranting in the ring about something. Are TH2 supposed to be heels now? But you already have Penta who is supposed to be a heel? Jack ties Pentas mask to the ropes in full view of the ref, who tries to undo it and then cautions Jack. Great match, other than that goofy-looking Canadian Destroyer.

Tay Conti v Ashley DAmboise. I groaned when I saw the match-up. I groaned even harder some points during the match, like during the clumsy schoolboy off the turnbuckle. Might have been the worst match of the night so far.

JD Drake v Jungle Boy. Loud pop for JB, but it didnt last as long as the one for Rosa but then we got a large reaction at the start of the match. It was the main event and there wasnt anything really wrong with the match, but I couldnt get into it. I generally have mixed feeling about JD Drake because hes in lousy shape while not being big enough to really get away with that. Plus they have him hanging out in a jobber stable so I think of him as a jobber by association.

Oh, and I watched the pre-show match or whatever for DoN between Serena and Riho. Serena is still so good in the ring, but Riho is a waste of space. Serena could have taken pretty much anybody on the AEW women's roster (except Tay Conti and Julia Hart) and had a match that was either every bit as good or better.
