While Ulti is correct that there's a certain level of degeneracy and mental deficiency involved with a sizable portion of the MMO playing community, it is in fact possible to play and enjoy these games casually without them consuming your life. I've been casually playing FF14 since ARR with 3 of my friends and we are all successful in both career and family life. I mean you can also enjoy drugs and alcohol without them consuming your life.
