It was obvious when they had that past segment where he was explaining to kid Mark the fake story about how Viltrimites go from planet to planet "helping" people. This had the reach/blue beetle arc from Young Justice written all over it, and if I hadn't seen YJ or similar shows beforehand, I probably would have believed that story at facevalue. They didn't really try to hide it.
