AEW Elevation #9 -- 5/10/21
Jon Moxley Main Events + Tay Conti, Matt Hardy, Jurassic Express and More! | AEW Elevation, Ep 8

Wrongly listed as ep 8, when ep 8 was actually week. Otherwise, its a close to 2 hour episode >_<

The night started off with a Big Shoddy (aka Lee Johnson) match. I was tempted to skip it because Lee is kinda awful, but the other guy (David Ali, with the 0-5 record) seemed interesting. It was a sloppy match, but it had okay pacing. David Ali looked great, Big Shoddy looked like crap. Neither guy seemed to know how to throw a convincing punch, so Im not sure why they kept doing it.

I love how afterward Tony mentions that Big Shoddys previous record was 0-29. Wtf, Tony? Way to bury a guy on Elevation.

Next was Eddie Kingston v VSK, which I also was tempted to skip. There was one point in the match where it looked like VSK accidentally dropped Eddie on his head. And during this match, Tony points out that VSK hasnt won a match this year. Dont fucking remind us, Tony. That just makes your job guys look even worse and thereby makes the wins meaningless.

Page + Sky vs Baron Black and Fuego del Sol (whos usually on my no-watch list) was the first match of the night I actually cared about seeing. I really like Ethan Page. The guy is big on spiking the ball. When he kicked Baron Black when he was hitting the ropes, he made sure to wave to BB afterward. Its the little gestures like that which go a long way. It was annoying as hell watching Scorpio and Page grown men taking hits from Fuego like that.

Danny Limelight interview with Show/Paul Wight. Kinda like some of these interviews. I had thought that the feature was a waste, but it works (even if Paul Wight is an awful interviewer).

Rosa vs Renee Michelle. Renee looks like somebody they just grabbed out of a lingerie magazine, so its probably unsurprising that the match just started with grappling where Rosa was leading most of the time. Really awful match. I think I remember a previous Renee Michelle fight, but I didnt think it was this bad. She shouldnt be in any recorded matches.

Eddie Kingston promo on the Bucks. Was meh.

Chuck Taylor vs Vary Morales (Supposedly just a 0-1 record? But I thought hed lost a dozen matches?). And for some reason they spent the whole match talking about how Kenny Omega buried Pockets, which they claim Oh, Kenny is scared! or Kenny is arrogant!. I think 3 minutes into the match they finally acknowledged Chuck and Vary were in the ring.

Leyla Hirsh v Dani Jordan. It was at this point, 40 minutes in, that I realized its a 1hr52min episode. I figured Id watch a minute then skip the rest.

Page & Sky backstage interview. Kind of a waste.

Matt Sydal v Manny Smith (debut). Literally nothing to say about this one.

Jade Cargill vs Reka Tehaka. I think this is the first Jade match Ive watched. Shes on the thin side, but she looks huge. She mostly used power moves, although she didnt dominate the fight. Reka is really cool. Hopefully shell be big in the future. For now, shes a two-minute job gal. After the match, some guy claiming to be a wrestling lawyer interrupted and offered his services. Given that she doesnt seem like a talker, he might be a neat mouthpiece if he wasnt taller than her. A wrestling manager should *never* be taller than their client. Thats what made guys like Paul Heyman, Jimmy Hart, and Jim Cornette work. (The obvious exception is managers who are active wrestlers, like Matt Hardy.)

Matt Hardy + Marq (of Private Party) vs two Nightmare Factory rejects (Dillion McQueen and I cant remember). The NF guys were lousy. I think Im going to just skip anything involving Dillion McQ going forward.

Britt Baker v Rachyll Rose.

Madi Wrenkowski v Tay Conti. Madi is still green, Tay is still clumsy. They *really* shouldnt be matched against each other. Out of the two, Madi might actually be a talent someday. However, Tay will always have a place based purely on her looks, if nothing else.

Thunder Rosa backstage interview. Not a terrible segment, other than shouting out the Lights Out match.

Chaos Project v Jurassic Express represented by Jungle Boy and Marko Stunt. FFS! Marko Stunt is the absolute worst. If it was Luchasaurus and Stunt, Id probably have just skipped. That said, it was nice to see Luther power through all of Stunts crap. I also never realized exactly how tiny Serpentico is. Hes almost as small as Stunt. Kinda bullshit at the end where Luther started selling Stunts moves, despite Stunt being tiny compared to him.

Kassidy (rep Private Party & HFO) v Alex Reynolds (Dork Order). During this match, you could see Kilynn King among the wrestlers among the ringside plants. Kinda hard to get away with making her look like just a fan >_>

Danny Limelight v Jon Moxley. This really didnt make any sense. You have this interview building up poor Danny while sending him into an obvious job well, unless the only reason Danny was being built up was so his loss would be more meaningful. I also didnt realize how small Danny is. Otherwise it wwas at the end of a nearly 2-hour episode, so I was only half paying attention by this point. It looked decent from what I saw of it (mostly on Dannys side)

All in all, it was a mostly lackluster episode. There were a few matches where I liked who was involved (and I'm fine with watching a terrible Madi Wrenkowski match), but there was really nothing great happening. Offhand, I think either the Jade match or the Danny match (that I only half-watched) might have been the best of the night.
