I feel like the writing in most fanfiction is quite bad tbh, which really makes it hard for me.

Of course, the type of fanfiction I'm mainly interested in if any at all is romance-focused stuff which might be worse in that department, idk.

There's obviously been some I've found that are good or great but that hasn't really been the norm.

Yeah, honestly the one that had the most promise of the handful I've read a bit through on this (current) whim was an AU where the small town Ren was from and had to leave was Inaba and the timeline got shuffled a bit to have Nanako tag along as a second transfer student incensed at the injustice of it.

but then the romance-leaning stuff kept overtaking the writing and bringing down the concept imo

When I say I've had the good fortune of reading a few really good fanfics... I'm talking like a number I can count on one hand lol and has definitely skewed my perception and standards. Come to think of it, romance is basically absent or very much background in those... might be a lesson there. (Which is a bit of a shame given that I myself also like shipping a bit too much for my own good) Maybe another "can count on one hand" group a tier below that that generally have the problem of just going off the rails entirely after an otherwise good start.

But as a quality control measure I generally restrict myself to ones that have TVTropes recommendations/blurbs that sound okayish (better than nothing) and/or generally a sort by favorites on FFN or AO3 to try and - theoretically - be looking at the better ones.
