So why is it considered a comedy

The original definition of "comedy" and "tragedy" weren't "funny" and "sad", they were more indicators of whether or not a story was going to have a happy ending, or if the main character was going to be broken by the gods or their own hubris and suffer in a way that the audience can sympathize with. It's the definition mostly applied to stuff like Greek plays and Shakespeare.

Though you could also chalk it up to cultural differences. If you were living in a time with a 50%+ infant mortality rate where you could die from plague, famine, or neighboring tribes/nations coming to kill you to take your stuff any given week, you probably wouldn't be inclined to smile all that much either.
