There aren't many ways to talk about this that people with privilege will find palatable.

Everyone wants to believe that it's their hard effort and smart decision making that is responsible for their wins. It's a bias that's very hard to break through.

On top of that, people tend to inherently over estimate how tough they have had it in comparison to others unless cued very specifically. Which is why you have a bunch of people in white upper middle class suburbia who describe themselves as "poor".

The issue is not the inherent ideas behind relative privilege, but the act of assigning privilege to individuals. We can describe on average that white people have it better than black people in America. There are plenty of objective facts that back that up. The issue comes when you want to apply that to the individual level. Correct or not, it is a label on a person that can come with a lot of different implications depending on who is doing the labeling and how the person reacts to the labeling. This is a conversation to be had, but the people guiding it are doing a really shitty job in terms of presentation.
