Over time once you unlock all of the items you'll be able to figure out what's worth leaving in the pool and what's not worth it, it's the sort of game that just requires a lot of practice. I also wouldn't recommend learning the game with Bard, I think he's the only character that lets you play to your own beat, so you're kind of setting yourself up for frustration if you go to try other characters out later on.
Yeah you start getting into this feeling that the bard is the norm when he's the outlier. In fact there's a lore reason why the bard is the only one able to ignore the beat.

I'd REALLY recommend NOT playing bard, but it's dependent on how you want to play the game. If you just want to beat the game then play the bard. If you want to get the story, you're gonna have to play as Cadence + 3 other characters to get the full story, and the game won't let you play as bard for the story, you HAVE to play as them. Fortunately what you CAN do to get the full story playing as harder characters is complete them floor by floor you don't have to do an all zones run. So for that last character, Aria, you only have to worry about progressing bit by bit instead of all at once and listening to that sweet FamilyJules metal-rock remix.

If you enjoy the game but think it's too hard to play unless you're bard, Cadence of Hyrule may be up your alley.
